Superbowl Snacks and Steaks

Since the light went out during the third quarter, I’m taking the time to post a little but about the snacks and steaks we had during the game.

Superbowl - Chocolate Ecstasy

Last night my wife, Linda, made her famous Chocolate Ecstasy. It’s a pretty simple dessert to make and it goes fast. All you need is some chocolate pudding, Cool Whip, brownies, and Crunch bars. Start at the bottom of the dessert dish and line it with brownies. Then add a layer of pudding, a layer of Cool Whip and top it off with broken up pieces of Crunch bar. Then do it all over again for as many layers as you want. It is probably my favorite dessert that my wife makes. Scratch that – it IS my favorite dessert she makes.

Superbowl - Chocolate Ecstasy PlatedAn hour before the game started we prepped some homemade mozzarella sticks. We’ve done them before and  it’s always hard to get them to come out right. This time I did pretty well. Slice up the mozzarella into sticks and dip it in egg then in bread crumbs. Set them on a baking sheet and put them in the freezer for 30 minutes. Then heat some cooking oil. I cook just one at a time so they don’t get away from me. I dip them briefly until they get golden brown and then pull them out. This is where we usually have problems. It’s hard to cook them all the way through without running into problems. This time I decided not to worry about that. I just made sure the outside looked good.

Superbowl - Homemade Mozzarella SticksWhen they were all done, I put them in the oven at 400 for a few minutes to let them melt a bit more on the inside. I think this is how I am going to do them from now on because they came out better than they ever have this way.

Superbowl - Mozzarella SticksA little before the game I fired up the grill and cooked up a nice rib-eye for Linda and a New York Strip for myself.

Superbowl SteaksI made up plantains for Linda and some fries for both of us to go along with the steaks. It was a great meal, but I made sure to leave room for dessert.

Superbowl Strip Steak

Neither of us really had much serious interest in the game since our teams didn’t make it in. Since the Ravens beat the Patriots (who I wanted to see in the game) I figure they deserve to win the Superbowl. So far things are going their way.

Anyway, the lights are back on and so is the game, so I’m headed back to the couch to see more of it and those hilarious commercials. The M&Ms “I Would Do Anything For Love” commercial is my favorite this year.

TGI Fridays Gift Card

Over the holidays, my brother gave us a gift card to TGI Fridays. My wife and I don’t tend to eat out often. Usually we do carryout instead and eat in the comfort of our own home. Last weekend we decided to treat ourselves to a nice late lunch. We figured dinner would be more crowded – especially on the weekend.

We started with the potato skins and mozzarella sticks. These are two of our favorite appetizers at TGI Fridays – anywhere really. We didn’t finish all of them on purpose. They are pretty filling and we wanted room for our meals. We did, however, get them boxed up to take home with us for later.

Linda ordered the Hibachi Steak Skewers. They are made with Black Angus steak. It’s marinated in a black pepper soy sauce with some garlic and basted with a miso glaze. It’s all served over a jasmine rice pilaf. She ordered broccoli as her side dish. I’m not sure why, but the skewers come with some grilled pita bread too. She gave me a taste of some of the steak from the skewers and it was pretty good. I couldn’t even tell it had garlic in the marinade.

TGI Fridays Hibachi Steak SkewersI ordered the Black Angus Flat Iron Steak. It’s topped with a maison butter which I didn’t care for much, but it didn’t detract from the steak much. The steak was very flavorful and incredibly tender. It’s also very lean. I don’t leave anything behind like I usually do. That’s why I always try to find a TGI Fridays when I travel for business. I’ve even found a few airports that have one. Anyway, I selected broccoli and sweet potato fries as my two sides. The broccoli was OK, but I prefer the florets. They also weren’t seasoned very well or possibly at all. There’s something that strange to hear coming from me. The sweet potato fries were really good. I think they were baked because they weren’t oily. They didn’t have the kick that my sweet potato fries do, but I really liked them.

TGI Fridays Black Angus Flat Iron SteakIt was a very enjoyable meal out. Later that night, we heated up the leftover potato skins and mozzarella sticks. Overall, I’d have to say that TGI Fridays is probably one of my favorite restaurants. If it was a little closer we might be more inclined to eat there more often. It makes a really nice treat though.

Brickhouse Pizza & Grille

Linda had bought a Groupon for a $50 lunch/dinner at Brickhouse Pizza & Grille a while back and we finally decided to use it today. It was a deal for 4 people, but we called and they were fine with us eating in for lunch and taking dinner to go. When we arrived, the place had a really nice look to it and they had small LCD TVs on each table hooked up to Direct TV.

When the waitress came, we ordered drinks and some mozzarella sticks and potato skins as appetizers. They were both delicious. We were kind of torn on what to order. I thought about getting my usual bacon cheeseburger for lunch and a chicken parmesan for dinner. We talked it over for a bit and decided to order a whole grain pizza instead of burgers.

While we were waiting, I saw a woman from the back come out and sit down with some ladies who were seated next to us. I leaned in to my wife and told her that she looks an awful lot like Mama from Mama’s Pizza which had closed 5 years ago. When the woman got up and walked past us, I asked her if she was who I thought. She was! Not only that she still remembers my family.

When I was in my teens we first started going to Mama’s Pizza which was the best pizza in town. It was someplace we knew well and they knew us too. I was so surprised to see her. I had wondered what happened to Mama’s Pizza. She had retired 5 years ago and sold the place. It has changed hands several times since then and nobody has been able to make it work. Her kids convinced her to open another place.

I’m so glad my wife found the Groupon for Brickhouse Pizza & Grille. It was great to see Mama again and (as we expected) the food was great. I can’t wait for dinner to see how good the chicken parmesan is, but I’m still full from lunch.
